Season Summary

Grandview Park Baptist’s great 2010 volleyball season came to an end this year with a disappointing loss at the state playoffs. The Lady Defenders were ranked as one of the top five teams in the state throughout the entire season with an overall record of 35-12 and a conference record of 10-1. The out of conference competition of the Lady Defenders was unrivaled by any other team in the state. They qualified for the state tournament in Cedar Rapids for the third straight year. The Lady Defenders took on the Stanton Vikings in the first round of state. After winning game one, the Defenders lost three in a row.

Senior Lauren had this to say about the season: “Overall we had great year and team unity was the key to our success.” When asked about the season, Coach Matt Thompson said, “We had a great conference season winning the small side. The regular season really prepared us for the road to state. Eleven losses came to 2-4A schools and nine losses came to ranked teams. This is one of the best teams I’ve ever had but I wish we could’ve ended it a little better.”

Though a state championship was not to be, many individual awards were given. Seniors Amanda and Bethany were named the captains of the team. Amanda, Bethany and Meredith were awarded with a first team all-conference selection. Seniors Kailee and Jessica were named to second team all-conference team. Lauren earned an honorable mention selection. Amanda, Bethany, Meredith and Jessica were chosen for All-District honors. Finally, Amanda was awarded a spot on the first team all-state team, Bethany on the second team, and Meredith an honorable mention.

The Grandview Junior High Volleyball team also enjoyed some success. The seventh grade team had an overall record of 5-4 and team leader Cassidy said, “We played well overall and worked well together. I hope we can get better for next year.” The eighth grade team also had a fine year. Squadron chief Kailee commented, “We had a good season and I’m really looking forward to next year.”
