"Michael Jackson is a freak"

Recently I sat down and watched the interview with the so-called "King of Pop."  I initially found myself shocked, disturbed, sickened, saddened, and confused.  Thoughts began racing through my mind.  These thoughts were echoed by my students in class the next day when I asked, "What did you think of the Michael Jackson interview?"  Some of the replies are listed below:

-         He’s a freak

-         He’s a homosexual

-         He is wacked

-         He’s had some childhood issues

-         His face is messed up

 - Peter Pan is his hero!?

- He’s disturbed

- He is a pedophile

- He’s a child

- His life is a dream world

Later that evening I repented.

Isn’t it interesting that we never thought, "Jesus loves Michael Jackson!?" We are so good at dissecting sinners, aren’t we?  We live in our hallowed halls, Christian cars, and Bible-believing buildings "I’m afraid we are of the world but not in it.

As small children we scream with veins popping from our necks"

"Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world"

red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight!

But something happens as we "mature" (or we think it’s maturity).

Jesus’ love, which we say we know so much about, somehow evolves into a cynical, external, performance-based, polished code of rules where we categorize spirituality, trample on each other, and exterminate the lost.  What’s the deal?

If Jesus entered our culture today I fear many of us would mentally challenge his activities "what is He doing in there?" "That person he’s talking with  is a homosexual!"  "He’s eating boji fries with a sexual fornicator!"  "Doesn’t he know how that looks?"  "How come he didn’t come to our Christian Tea Party?"

"Why is he spending the afternoon at Neverland Ranch with that freak?"

WHAT HAVE WE BECOME?

"Everything they do is for men to see…

They love the places of honor at banquets…

Woe to you…you hypocrites!

…you give a tenth…

but you have neglected the more important matters of the law.

You are like white-washed tombs!

You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces!”  Matt. xxiii
