The 2006 golf team achieved a first this past spring: a sectional victory! Having missed state by one stroke and having all their members back for the 2007 season, the team has high hopes for making the state tournament this year.
...Jon's Dramatic Thoughts...
Spring golf in Iowa has a reputation for being quite tenuous. The conditions are terrible: 40+ mph winds, rain, and 35º F. It is very difficult golfing in these conditions. Spring golf beats on you physically and mentally. There are times when my hands were so cold and stiff I golfed with big, winter mitts on my cold, bleeding hands.
Going into the state tourney, I knew exactly what the conditions were going to be. Coach Borich guaranteed gusty winds, since Otter Creek is an elevated course. Just as he predicted, an abundance of wind was present that dark, misty first day. It took its toll on me too. The wind sprayed my high-trajectory all over the course. But even worse, I couldn't roll the rock, when I finally did get on the green.
Despite my struggles, I found it to be a very enjoyable time. If there is one thing I learned, it's to bite the bullet and forget about my troubles on the golf course. -Jon
